Wendy Lomers presided as President during the recent Radiology Business Management Association’s Fall Executive Conference held in Boston. The conference was a successful collaboration of imaging leaders focused on deciphering the future role of imaging and how to adapt to the changing healthcare environment. Wendy participated in a panel discussion with other industry leaders in addition to making several presentations on a very pertinent topic for Radiologists: Affordable Care Act (ACA) Marketplaces or Exchanges.
Wendy explained the expected workings of the new Individual and SHOP (small business) Marketplaces and explored many of the possible implications they will have on radiology, healthcare and the overall economy. One important factor is the probability that Marketplace plans will not only cover the “un” and “under” insured, but will likely cover a large population of patients who are currently being covered by commercial managed care plans. Understanding this will be important as physicians determine appropriate reimbursement rates for these new Marketplace plans.
The enrollment period for both types of ACA Marketplaces will begin October 1, 2013 and the plans will have an effective coverage date of January 1, 2014.
